Key Lesson: Take the Win, Then Reload Into Fresh IV

SPY closed at $780.24 (+0.70% on the day) and is up 2.31% over the last five sessions, so the short-term trend is clearly up. The VIX sits at 15.39, which is calm. Option premiums on index-type products are modest, and that means you have to be pickier and go where the implied volatility actually is, at the single-name level. Breadth is the quiet caveat: only 49% of tracked stocks are above their 200-day SMA, so this rally is not lifting everything evenly. Sector leadership was cyclical and tech-driven. XLI led at +1.19%, followed by XLK (+0.95%), XLF (+0.75%) and QQQ (+0.72%). Defensives were mixed, with XLP up 0.67% and XLV barely moving (+0.13%). XLE (-0.23%) was the only real laggard, and IWM was flat at +0.02%, which again says small caps are not participating. With JPM, GS, WFC, C, JNJ and UNH all reporting October 13, I'm keeping financials and big healthcare out of new short-put territory this week.
Key Lesson
Take the Win, Then Reload Into Fresh IV
Both closed trades this week (MARA and DRAM) were winners I exited before expiration, and the AXTI put shows why: when most of the premium is gone and a few days remain, the remaining reward is tiny compared to the gap risk. Closing early frees up buying power and lets you re-enter where implied volatility is still rich. It's the same discipline as selling new MARA calls at 80% IV rank instead of coasting on a nearly-decayed contract.
Featured Trade Analysis
$MARA
I closed the MARA $13.5 covered call (exp 10/02) for +$112 across 4 contracts, then immediately sold a new $14 call expiring 11/06 for $0.29 at an 80% IV rank. The new call is roughly flat on a mark-to-market basis (-$8) while the underlying position carries about +$550 unrealized, so I'm still comfortable with the shares being called away at $14.
When a covered call has done its job, close it, bank the win, and re-sell into elevated IV rather than letting it sit for the last few cents.
$DRAM
The DRAM $50 cash-secured put (exp 10/16) closed for +$117 on one contract, well ahead of expiration. I'd rather free up the capital and the risk than hold a position for the final sliver of premium with 10 days still on the clock.
Taking profits early recycles capital and cuts tail risk, and you don't need to hold to expiration to win.
$AXTI
I sold the AXTI $70 put (exp 10/09) at a 125% IV rank for $2.30 and it's now showing +$207 mark-to-market with only 3 days left. That's most of the premium captured, but at that IV rank the stock can still gap hard against me, so I'm watching it rather than assuming it's finished.
With only a sliver of premium left and 3 days to go, the risk/reward of holding a high-IV short put gets worse, so consider closing and redeploying.
IV Environment
With the VIX at 15.39, index-level premium is thin and the opportunity is in individual names. The biggest IV spike came in ITA, which jumped from a 32% to a 78% IV rank, followed by FSK and EXR. On the other side NKE fell from 79% to 43% as its volatility bled out, and MU and INTC both dropped to a 23% rank, so premium selling in those names is far less attractive than it was a week ago.
Top Cash-Secured Put Candidates
| Ticker | Strike | Expiry | Premium | IV Rank | Ann ROC | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $BP | $41 | Nov 20 | $0.82 | 73 | 16% | A 73% IVR with the stock above both its 200- and 50-day SMAs and a 25-delta strike gives a solid cushion, and the +8% last-quarter EPS surprise supports the fundamentals. |
| $CVX | $195 | Nov 20 | $3.98 | 50 | 17% | A $405B mega-cap with 63k open interest, an uptrend (+17.3% over 90 days) and a 27-delta strike is a liquid, quality name to own if assigned. |
| $PM | $180 | Nov 20 | $3.75 | 72 | 17% | Low beta (0.36), a 72% IVR and a neutral RSI of 50 make this a defensive-style premium seller that adds diversification away from energy. |
| $FCX | $65 | Nov 20 | $1.95 | 62 | 24% | A 24% annualized return at a 23-delta strike with a +24% EPS surprise and 92k open interest is attractive, though the beta of 1.39 and five insider sales argue for smaller sizing. |
| $GILD | $135 | Nov 20 | $2.74 | 42 | 17% | Low beta (0.33), trading above both key moving averages and a 24-delta strike diversify the list into healthcare, and the -4.4% 30-day pullback gives a slightly better entry. |
Top Covered Call Candidates
| Ticker | Strike | Expiry | Premium | IV Rank | Ann ROC | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $ZETA | $40 | Nov 20 | $1.43 | 51 | 29% | The best annualized return on the list at 29%, with the stock above both moving averages, though a +51.8% 90-day run and a 1.39 beta mean you should be fine with getting called away at $40. |
| $PLTR | $220 | Nov 20 | $5.65 | 47 | 21% | An RSI of 62 (not overheated) and huge liquidity at 289k open interest make this the cleanest fill on the list for a 25-delta call. |
| $CLS | $460 | Nov 20 | $14.3 | 68 | 25% | A 68% IVR pays well on a 28-delta call, but with the stock up 23.5% in 30 days, size it as a position you're happy to sell at $460. |
| $CAT | $940 | Nov 20 | $26.5 | 65 | 23% | An industrial leader with a 65% IVR and a 23% annualized return that adds sector diversification from the tech-heavy list. |
| $SHOP | $190 | Nov 20 | $5.83 | 50 | 25% | A 25% annualized return at a 26-delta strike with the stock in an uptrend, though the 2.63 beta means large swings in both directions. |
Quick Tips This Week
- →With the VIX near 15 and breadth at 49%, favor individual names with a high IV rank over index products, since index premium is thin and the rally isn't broad.
- →A wave of bank, healthcare and consumer earnings lands October 8-13, so make sure no short option you hold expires through an earnings date unless you're intentionally taking that risk.
- →In a rally that small caps (IWM flat) aren't joining, prefer liquid, large-cap underlyings with tight bid/ask spreads so you can close early at a fair price.
Consistency beats cleverness: keep your size small, your strikes disciplined, and let time decay do the heavy lifting.
