VIX at 15.87: Why I'm Still Selling Premium in a Sleepy Market
Key Lesson: Premium Collected Isn't the Same as P&L

VIX sits at 15.87 this week — comfortably low and confirming the market's summer-lull vibe. SPY is basically flat over the last five sessions (+0.15%), and with 62% of tracked stocks above their 200-day SMA, breadth still leans risk-on even though price action is choppy and directionless. This is the kind of tape that separates the wheel traders who chase premium from the ones who wait for the right setup. Sector-wise, nothing screamed for attention this week — all our tracked ETFs (SPY, QQQ, XLK, XLF, XLV, XLP, XLE, XLI, IWM) closed flat versus last week's levels, which tells you the rotation story is quiet for now. With IV Rank showing no major spikes or drops across the board, premium sellers need to be more selective about where they're getting paid versus where they're just picking up scraps.
Key Lesson
Premium Collected Isn't the Same as P&L
This week's IREN and MARA trades are a perfect illustration: strong option-level gains can coexist with painful unrealized losses on the underlying stock. When you're running the wheel on volatile names like miners or quantum computing plays, track your total cost basis and breakeven — not just how the short call is performing in isolation. The wheel is a stock strategy first, an income strategy second.
Featured Trade Analysis
$MARA CC $13.5
I sold this call for $0.28 per contract across 4 contracts back when IVR was a juicy 81%, and it's basically flat on the week at +$6 MTM. The unrealized loss of $290 tells the real story — MARA has run against me since entry and the call is now working against my cost basis on the underlying, not the option itself.
A small weekly gain on the option can mask a much larger underlying paper loss — always look at total position P&L, not just the premium leg.
$IREN CC $47 (exp 10/09)
This is my current open IREN call, sold for $1.03 with IVR at 79%. It's up only $2 on the week but sitting on a $982 unrealized loss, meaning IREN has ripped well past my strike and I'm now deep in 'do I let it get called away or roll' territory.
When a covered call underlying runs hard past your strike, decide early whether you're happy taking the assignment gain or determined to keep the shares — indecision costs you optionality.
$IONQ CC $50
Sold at $1.70 premium with IVR 83%, this one is my best performer this week: +$129 MTM even though I'm still down $564 unrealized on the underlying. It's a good reminder that quantum/AI names can be volatile enough to make premium selling genuinely profitable even against an underwater stock position.
High IVR entries on volatile names can generate real weekly income even while the stock itself digs out of a hole.
$IREN CC $47 (closed, exp 08/28)
This is the trade I'm most proud of this week — I closed out my prior IREN $47 call for a full +$224 gain on just one contract. It expired favorably, freeing up my shares to sell a fresh call (the one now open above) at a new strike and expiry.
Letting a covered call run to a clean win and immediately rolling into a new contract is the wheel working exactly as designed.
IV Environment
IV was quiet across the board this week with no significant IVR moves flagged — a stark contrast to weeks with big spikes. That means premium sellers should be more selective, favoring names with structurally elevated IVR (like MPC at 89% or MGM at 79%) rather than chasing low-IV names just for the ticker.
Top Cash-Secured Put Candidates
| Ticker | Strike | Expiry | Premium | IV Rank | Ann ROC | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $MPC | $340 | Oct 16 | $8.9 | 89 | 21% | Elevated IVR at 89% with strong uptrend and low beta (0.51) makes this a well-compensated, lower-volatility CSP in the energy/refining space. |
| $MU | $860 | Oct 16 | $36.42 | 41 | 34% | Strong 30-day momentum (+16.5%) and solid open interest give this semiconductor CSP good liquidity and a healthy 34% annualized return. |
| $COPX | $85 | Oct 16 | $2.5 | 57 | 24% | A copper/materials ETF play above both moving averages offers sector diversification away from tech-heavy premium selling. |
| $MGM | $39 | Oct 16 | $1 | 79 | 21% | High IVR of 79% in a beaten-down travel/leisure name gives contrarian premium sellers a decent entry, though the low RSI of 28 signals caution on further downside. |
| $XLB | $50 | Oct 16 | $1.35 | 65 | 22% | A broad materials sector ETF trading above both moving averages offers a steady, lower-drama CSP for diversification purposes. |
Top Covered Call Candidates
| Ticker | Strike | Expiry | Premium | IV Rank | Ann ROC | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $NOW | $170 | Oct 2 | $4.3 | 48 | 30% | Strong uptrend confirmed above both moving averages with solid open interest makes this a liquid, well-supported covered call in AI/cloud. |
| $MPC | $420 | Oct 16 | $8.95 | 89 | 17% | Elevated IVR with a low beta of 0.51 gives conservative covered call sellers a stable, well-compensated setup. |
| $GDX | $112 | Oct 16 | $2.15 | 43 | 16% | Gold miners ETF with strong 30-day momentum offers a defensive, diversifying covered call outside of tech and crypto exposure. |
| $XLB | $55 | Oct 16 | $2.4 | 65 | 35% | Materials sector ETF above both moving averages provides a solid annualized return with lower single-stock risk. |
| $ZETA | $35 | Oct 2 | $1.26 | 37 | 42% | Strong recent momentum (+43.4% 30d) and a healthy 42% annualized return make this a speculative but well-timed covered call for those already holding shares. |
Quick Tips This Week
- →With VIX under 16, don't overreach on strikes just to juice premium — a flat SPY tape means you're better served by higher-IVR individual names than low-vol broad ETFs right now.
- →Double-check the earnings calendar before opening any new CSP or CC this week — several major names (AVGO, DELL, PANW, SNOW) report in the next few days and could gap through your strikes.
- →In a risk-on breadth environment (62% above 200-SMA) but choppy price action, favor shorter-duration trades (2-4 weeks) so you can reassess quickly rather than getting locked into a stale thesis.
The wheel doesn't need a trending market to work — it needs discipline, and this week's quiet tape is the perfect time to practice it.
Trade logically,
